Frank Caprio, affectionately known worldwide as “the kindest judge on Earth,” has passed away at the age of 88 on August 20, 2025. His family confirmed the news, following his brave fight against pancreatic cancer. Just before his passing, Caprio shared an emotional video from his hospital bed, requesting prayers—reflecting his deep humility and unwavering faith.
Born in 1936 in Providence, Rhode Island, to Italian immigrant parents, Caprio rose from modest beginnings. In his early years, he worked various jobs like dishwashing and shoe-shining. He later pursued law while teaching government classes, eventually becoming Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court.
His courtroom gained global admiration through the widely watched series Caught in Providence, where his gentle, understanding style replaced sternness with sincerity. The show captured millions of hearts, portraying real cases resolved with humor, patience, and grace. His courtroom was later named in his honor, a lasting tribute to his legacy.
In 2023, Caprio made his cancer diagnosis public, offering followers an intimate view of his treatment journey. Despite initial progress, his health worsened recently. His final message on social media urged people to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.
Governor Dan McKee declared a day of mourning, stating Rhode Island had lost a true gem. Caprio is survived by his wife of 60 years, five children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
His legacy lives on as a beacon of how justice can be delivered with kindness.
