Wichita: A truck drove into a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and leaving 10 other people hospitalised with traumatic injuries, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred at the Stryker Sports Complex, where families had gathered to watch children play soccer. The truck came to a stop in a field at the western end of the complex, according to Wichita police.

Police Captain Aaron Moses said the injured included children and adults, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. None of the 10 people hospitalised with traumatic injuries appeared to have life-threatening injuries, he said. The two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

A further adult was hospitalised for non-traumatic medical issues, police said.

Authorities have not yet established why the truck entered the field. The 34-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle was in custody and cooperating with investigators, Moses said. Police did not provide further details about her status or whether formal charges had been filed.

“We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, and we’re not there yet,” Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said at a news conference.

The incident has left the local community grieving as investigators work to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Six-year-old boy and man killed at sports complex

The two people killed in the incident were a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, police confirmed.

The crash occurred during a youth soccer gathering at the Stryker Sports Complex, a venue used for sporting events and activities involving children and families.

According to Moses, the 10 people who sustained traumatic injuries included two five-year-olds, two eight-year-olds, a nine-year-old and five adults.

The range of ages among the injured underlined the impact of the incident on families attending the event. Emergency services responded after dispatchers began receiving calls at about 3.25 pm local time on Saturday.

Police said the injured were taken to hospital for treatment. Although the injuries varied in severity, officials said none of the 10 people with traumatic injuries appeared to be in life-threatening condition.

The additional adult hospitalisation involved non-traumatic medical issues and was reported separately from the 10 people injured in the crash.

Driver in custody as police investigate

Police identified the driver as a 34-year-old woman who was in custody following the incident.

Moses said she had been cooperating with investigators. However, police have not publicly established the reason the truck entered the field or whether the incident was intentional.

The driver had a child playing soccer at the sports complex, although not on the field where the truck struck people, Moses said.

The truck also had two juveniles as passengers at the time of the incident, according to police.

Investigators are now working to establish the sequence of events leading up to the crash. The circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s movement into the field, the driver’s actions and any other contributing factors remain under investigation.

Police Chief Sullivan said authorities knew what had happened in terms of the vehicle entering the area, but determining why it occurred would require further work.

No conclusion about the driver’s intentions or the cause of the crash had been announced in the information provided by police.

Emergency calls began in the afternoon

Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls about the incident at approximately 3.25 pm local time, Moses said.

The calls prompted a response to the Stryker Sports Complex, where the truck had ended up in a field at the western end of the venue.

The emergency response involved attending to the injured and confirming the deaths of the two victims. Police subsequently provided details about the number of people hospitalised and the ages of the children who were injured.

Authorities have not released further details about the exact circumstances in which the truck entered the soccer field.

The investigation will be important in determining how the vehicle reached the area where the game was taking place and what happened immediately before the impact.

Wichita mayor calls it a heartbreaking day

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed condolences to the victims and their families, describing the incident as a tragedy for the city.

“Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita,” Wu said.

She noted that families had gathered at the sports complex for an ordinary Saturday afternoon, expecting to watch their children play soccer.

“Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon, watching their children play soccer and no one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold,” she said.

The mayor’s statement reflected the shock felt by a community where the sports complex had been a gathering place for children, parents and spectators.

The deaths of a young child and an adult, alongside the injuries to other children and adults, have brought renewed attention to the safety of public sporting venues and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigation focuses on why the truck entered the field

Police have confirmed the basic details of the crash but have not yet explained why it occurred.

The driver remains in custody, and authorities are continuing to investigate the events that led to the truck entering the field. Her cooperation with investigators has been confirmed, but police have not announced whether charges will be filed.

The fact that the driver had a child participating in a different game at the complex is part of the information released by police. Two juveniles were also passengers in the truck, although their identities and condition were not detailed in the report.

Investigators will need to establish the vehicle’s movements and the circumstances immediately before the crash before drawing conclusions about the cause.

For now, police have not characterised the incident as deliberate, and no motive has been established.

Community mourns victims of soccer-field tragedy

The crash has transformed what began as a family sporting event into a day of mourning for Wichita.

The six-year-old boy and the 35-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene, while 10 people sustained traumatic injuries requiring hospitalisation. The injured included several young children, as well as adults.

Mayor Wu’s statement captured the disbelief surrounding the incident, with families having gathered at the complex for a routine afternoon of youth sport.

As the investigation continues, the immediate priorities remain supporting those affected and establishing why the truck entered the field.

Police have said they are working to determine the circumstances behind the crash. Until that investigation progresses, the cause remains unknown.
