Kraków’s Christmas tree, adorning the historic market square, has been named the “most iconic” in the world by Time Out. The Polish city claimed the top spot in the magazine’s ranking, surpassing second-place Gubbio in Italy and third-place Rockefeller Center in New York. Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, followed in fourth.
Time Out described Kraków as a city brimming with holiday cheer, especially in December. The city’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, with its picturesque streets and architecture, is likened to a Christmas card backdrop. The market square, home to a festive market each year, is the heart of the holiday season, with the Christmas tree next to the cathedral serving as the crowning centerpiece.
This year’s tree, unveiled on December 6th, is adorned with 26,000 energy-saving lights and over 1,000 baubles inspired by the tapestries of Kraków’s Wawel Castle. It will remain on display until February 2nd.
In addition to its tree, Kraków’s Christmas market, which was ranked the best in Europe last year, draws countless visitors. In 2023, the city attracted 12 million tourists and was named Europe’s best city break destination for the fourth consecutive year by British consumer association Which?.
