Man Killed in Swat Over Quran Desecration; 8 Injured

A man in the scenic Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northwest Pakistan, was killed by an enraged crowd after allegedly desecrating the Holy Quran. Police reported that eight others were injured during the subsequent unrest.

According to District Police Officer Zahidullah, the incident occurred in Madyan tehsil on Thursday night, where the man, originally from Sialkot district, Punjab, was accused of burning pages of the Holy Quran. He was apprehended and brought to Madyan police station. Outside the station, a mob demanded his release, leading to a confrontation with police. Gunfire ensued between the mob and police, resulting in one person sustaining serious injuries and being hospitalized in Madyan.

Following the exchange, the mob set fire to the police station. Later, they stormed inside, fatally shot the suspect, and publicly displayed his body in Madyan Adda. The violence caused injuries to eight individuals. In response, heavy police presence has been deployed in Madyan to restore calm.

Chief Minister KPK Ali Amin Gandapur has taken cognizance of the desecration incident and requested a report from the provincial police chief. He instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take immediate measures to stabilize the situation and urged the public to maintain peace and tranquility.
