In a tragic incident, 17-year-old Connor Kasin, a senior at Massapequa High School, passed away after collapsing on the ice during a charity hockey game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, New York. The game, held on Saturday night, was organized in memory of Sabrina Navaretta, a Syosset High School graduate who tragically died in a car accident in 2023.
During the game’s intermission, Kasin experienced a “medical event” and collapsed. Bystanders rushed to administer CPR until emergency responders arrived. Despite their efforts, Kasin was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. The cause of his collapse remains unknown, though police have confirmed no criminality was suspected.
Kasin was remembered by his school and hockey community for his positivity and leadership. Massapequa High School described him as someone who brought “light and joy” to others. The charity game was organized by a foundation in Navaretta’s name, which supports scholarships and grieving families.
Condolences have poured in from the community, including the Navaretta family, Kasin’s travel hockey team, Sharks Elite Youth Hockey, and the New York Islanders, who honored him by canceling all games that Sunday. His coach, Jeff Tempone, expressed the devastation felt by the team, describing Kasin as “a coach’s dream” and a “highly coachable kid.” The untimely death of Kasin has left a lasting impact on the Long Island community, highlighting the fragility of life.
