US First Lady Melania Trump presided over a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council focusing on children affected by armed conflict, days after reports of heavy casualties among schoolchildren in Iran.
The session, held at the UN Headquarters in New York, centred on protecting children’s access to education and technology during times of war. The United States currently holds the rotating presidency of the council, under which the meeting was convened.
Focus on children and education
In her remarks, Melania Trump stressed the importance of safeguarding children from the devastating consequences of conflict. She highlighted the need for uninterrupted education, digital access and psychological support in war-affected regions.
The meeting came amid escalating hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Iranian media had earlier reported that dozens of children were killed following strikes on a school in Minab. The claims have intensified diplomatic tensions at the global forum.
Diplomatic tensions surface
Iran’s representatives criticised the timing of the meeting, questioning the credibility of discussions on child protection while military operations continue. Other member states reiterated calls for adherence to international humanitarian law and stronger accountability mechanisms.
The session drew attention to the broader humanitarian cost of ongoing conflicts, with several delegates emphasising the urgent need to prioritise civilian safety.
As violence deepens across parts of the Middle East, the Security Council’s deliberations reflect growing global concern over the long-term impact of war on young lives.
