Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged action following the death of a Mexican national in United States immigration custody, intensifying scrutiny over detention conditions.

The deceased, Jose Guadalupe Ramos-Solano (52), died on March 25 at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in southern California. His cause of death has not yet been officially determined.

Rising deaths in custody raise concern

Ramos-Solano is the fourth detainee to die at the Adelanto facility this year and the 14th migrant death reported in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody nationwide in 2026.

Officials noted that the number of detainees currently held by ICE has surged to around 68,000, among the highest levels recorded.

Medical emergency and response

According to ICE, Ramos-Solano was found unconscious in his bunk, prompting immediate life-saving measures including CPR. He was later declared dead at a nearby hospital.

Authorities stated that he had underlying health conditions, including diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension, and had been receiving medical care during his detention.

Mexico pushes for accountability

Speaking at a press conference, President Sheinbaum said Mexico would take “greater measures” and pursue all available legal and diplomatic channels to seek clarity and justice.

Mexican officials confirmed that the government is filing a legal brief supporting a class-action lawsuit alleging unconstitutional conditions at the detention centre.

Allegations over detention conditions

The lawsuit against GEO Group, which operates the facility, claims detainees face poor conditions, including mould, disease, inadequate food, and insufficient medical care.

The company has previously maintained that its facilities comply with federal standards and provide round-the-clock healthcare under government oversight.

Family demands answers

Family members of Ramos-Solano have called for transparency, describing the incident as inhumane and seeking answers about the circumstances leading to his death.
