Rosita Salvador Mabuiango, the woman remembered worldwide as the “miracle baby” born in a tree during Mozambique’s devastating floods of 2000, has died after a prolonged illness, her family confirmed. She was 25.

Born amid historic floods

Rosita was born in February 2000 after her mother, Carolina Cecilia Chirindza, climbed a tree to escape rising floodwaters caused by the overflowing Limpopo river. The dramatic rescue of mother and newborn by helicopter became one of the most iconic images of Mozambique’s worst-ever floods, which killed hundreds and displaced thousands.

At the time, Rosita and her mother were stranded in a tree for four days without food before being spotted by a rescue helicopter. She was still attached to her mother by the umbilical cord when they were rescued.

A symbol of hope

Rosita later became a national symbol of survival and resilience. She travelled to the United States with her mother in 2000 to raise awareness about the disaster and its aftermath. Reflecting on her life, Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo described her as “a symbol for girls in Mozambique”.

Illness and death

Confirming her death, Rosita’s sister Celia Salvador said she passed away on Monday after battling a long illness. Family sources said she had suffered from anaemia for several years and was also undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. She had been hospitalised for over two weeks before her death.

Life after global attention

Rosita grew up in Chibuto, the same rural area where she was born, completed her schooling and later became a mother herself five years ago. Her family said she had hoped to pursue higher education, but financial and systemic challenges stood in the way.

Questions over healthcare

Analysts and local leaders said her death has renewed concerns about Mozambique’s overstretched healthcare system. Chibuto municipality officials said funeral arrangements are being coordinated in consultation with the family.
