Diana Yefymets, a 27-year-old mother of two, has captured widespread attention for her unique solution to getting a full night’s sleep: co-sleeping with her baby. Her TikTok video showing her partner setting up a playpen mattress for their daughter has gained over 140,000 likes and 4.1 million views.
Yefymets explained to Newsweek that her first child struggled with anxiety and couldn’t sleep alone, forcing her to manage solo parenting for months due to her husband’s work commitments. She recalls the constant advice she received to ensure her baby slept independently. However, this approach led to sleepless nights, with her son waking up every hour, leaving Yefymets exhausted and anxious.
Desperate for rest, Yefymets set up a large playpen to curl up in while her baby played. After discovering the Safe Sleep Seven guidelines from La Leche League International, which promote safer co-sleeping, she began following them. The guidelines include ensuring no smoking, maintaining sobriety, breastfeeding, and laying the baby on their back on a safe surface.
By adopting these guidelines, Yefymets and her baby started sleeping in longer stretches, allowing her postpartum anxiety to ease. She now feels empowered in her motherhood journey and highlighted the lack of education around co-sleeping in the U.S., contrasting it with the acceptance of the practice in other countries.
