A mother is urging parents to ensure the beauty products their children use are age-appropriate after her daughter developed a rash that worsened her eczema. Carly, from Sherburn in Elmet, explained that her 11-year-old daughter had eczema and the beauty products she used aggravated her skin condition. Carly highlighted the influence of social media on young people and stressed the importance of parents researching the contents of skincare products.

Her daughter’s rash, initially thought to be a flare-up of eczema, became more severe, particularly on her neck and face. Despite some improvement after showering, the rash left her skin dry and flaky. Carly felt guilty for not researching the products her daughter was using, realizing that many were not designed for young skin.

A dermatologist in Leeds confirmed an increasing number of children were reacting to inappropriate skincare products. Dr. Faheem Latheef, a Leeds-based dermatologist, explained that children’s skin is not fully developed, and using products designed for older skin types could cause irritation or even sensitivity to certain ingredients later in life. He recommended simple products like a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen for children.

Carly emphasized the need for clearer labels on products, stating that warnings should indicate if they are unsuitable for children. She urged parents to research products before allowing their children to use them, especially given the influence of social media trends.
