Tragedy struck as a single-engine plane crashed along Interstate 40 in Nashville, Tennessee, claiming the lives of all five individuals on board. Reports from authorities, as cited by AP, indicate that the aircraft encountered engine trouble just short of its intended destination, prompting an emergency landing attempt.

According to statements from Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron, the pilot initiated an emergency call to John C. Tune Airport around 7:40 pm on Monday, seeking permission to land after experiencing engine issues. Despite clearance for an emergency landing, the pilot relayed a distressing message indicating the impossibility of reaching the airport safely. Moments later, the plane erupted in flames and crashed into a grassy median near the highway, behind a Costco outlet on the west side of the city.

Aaron noted that witness accounts suggest the plane was in evident distress prior to impact, with significant difficulties maintaining control. Authorities released a preliminary statement via social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, confirming the crash and the loss of life, while efforts were underway to ascertain the origin of the ill-fated flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded to the scene, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) scheduled to join investigations on Tuesday. Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy in a post-crash statement.

Information provided by Nashville International Airport spokesperson Stacey Nickens revealed that the plane departed from Mount Sterling, Kentucky, and was bound for John C. Tune Airport, with an expected arrival time of 7:43 pm.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among motorists on Interstate 40, as confirmed by Nashville Fire Department spokesperson Kendra Loney. Additionally, no damage to vehicles or structures on the ground was reported.
