Pet-related disputes often turn ugly, but one woman’s creative response to a neighbour’s constant accusations has left the internet amused — and divided.
A 31-year-old woman recently shared her experience on Reddit, explaining how her calm, mostly indoor cat, Maomao, became the unlikely scapegoat for every inconvenience faced by her neighbour, Amiel, a man in his 50s. From missing socks and toppled plants to a malfunctioning garage door — and even his failed relationship — everything was somehow blamed on the cat.
The irony, she said, was that Maomao barely left the apartment, spending most of her day sleeping or quietly watching the outdoors from the porch.
While the accusations were mostly absurd, they became a regular annoyance. Matters took a turn when the woman decided to respond not with confrontation, but humour — and a touch of pettiness.
Amiel owns a parrot named Ginger, known for its loud and expressive nature. Whenever the bird was left outside on the patio, the woman casually spoke to it, repeating phrases like “Amiel did it” and “Clean your room”. Over time, Ginger picked up the phrases.
The result? The parrot began loudly repeating “Amiel did it!” whenever something went wrong — including during a phone call with Amiel’s boss. Furious, the neighbour confronted her, accusing her of “corrupting” his bird and demanding she undo the training.
The woman refused, stating that parrots do not simply “unlearn” phrases and suggesting that perhaps the real issue was his habit of unfairly blaming her pet.
Reddit users largely sided with the woman, calling the incident harmless, humorous, and a fitting response to months of misplaced blame. Many joked that Ginger had become the neighbourhood’s “accountability officer”.
While some felt both parties behaved immaturely, most agreed on one thing — the parrot may have said what everyone else was thinking.
