A festive New Year’s Eve in New Orleans’ French Quarter turned tragic early Wednesday when a white pickup truck drove into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street, resulting in at least 10 deaths and dozens of injuries. The FBI and local police are investigating the incident.
The chaos unfolded around 3:15 a.m. as the city’s iconic street remained busy with holiday celebrations. Eyewitnesses reported the vehicle crashing through a barricade and plowing into pedestrians. Kevin Garcia, 22, recounted, “All I saw was a truck slamming into everyone on the left side of the sidewalk. A body came flying at me.” Garcia also recalled hearing gunshots shortly after the crash.
Reports confirmed that the driver exited the vehicle and engaged in a gunfight with law enforcement. “We heard gunfire, saw police running,” said Nicole Mowrer, a witness. After the shooting subsided, she and her husband encountered multiple victims in need of assistance.
Police quickly secured the area, urging people to evacuate and keep their phones away. By dawn, the full extent of the devastation was clear: 10 dead and 30 injured. The wounded were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the attack was intentional, but the police chief described the driver’s actions as deliberate and destructive.
The FBI’s New Orleans field office is now leading the investigation, with the discovery of a suspected IED at the scene. Mayor LaToya Cantrell condemned the violence, calling it a “terrorist incident.”
