President Droupadi Murmu, who is currently on a diplomatic tour of Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste, arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday. Her visit marks a pivotal moment in the bilateral relations between India and New Zealand. Upon her arrival, President Murmu was warmly received by New Zealand Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro. The reception included a traditional Maori “Powhiri” ceremony and a formal Guard of Honour, reflecting the high regard in which the visiting leader is held.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called on President Murmu to discuss a range of significant issues. The conversations centred on deepening cultural connections between the two nations and reinforcing their commitment to regional and global security. Earlier in the day, President Murmu met with New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters. As part of her visit, President Murmu and Prime Minister Luxon also participated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington. This gesture symbolised the mutual respect and recognition of the sacrifices made by both nations.
A significant outcome of President Murmu’s visit is the upcoming agreement between India and New Zealand on customs procedures. This agreement is expected to bolster trade ties between the two countries by simplifying and enhancing the efficiency of customs processes. According to Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary East of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the agreement aims to facilitate the export of agricultural products such as fruits and vegetables, benefiting farmers in both nations.
Secretary Mazumdar emphasised that the agreement is a step towards strengthening economic relations and exploring further areas of cooperation. This development reflects the commitment of both countries to enhance trade and economic collaboration.
During her visit, President Murmu will also address an education conference and engage with the Indian community and friends of India in New Zealand. These interactions are expected to further bolster cultural and educational ties between the two countries.
Before arriving in New Zealand, President Murmu visited Fiji, where she was honoured with Fiji’s highest civilian award, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji’. This accolade reflects the strong and enduring friendship between India and Fiji. President Murmu’s visit also included a focus on strengthening ties with Timor-Leste, where she will conclude her tour following engagements on August 10.
