San Francisco: In a significant development in the global artificial intelligence talent war, Nobel Prize-winning scientist John Jumper has announced that he is leaving Google DeepMind to join rival AI startup Anthropic.

Jumper’s move is being seen as a major victory for Anthropic as technology companies intensify efforts to attract top AI researchers and scientists amid fierce competition to build advanced artificial intelligence systems.

The Nobel laureate announced his departure on X, ending nearly nine years at Google DeepMind.

Jumper bids farewell to DeepMind

In his social media post, Jumper wrote, “After nearly 9 years, I have decided to leave Google DeepMind and join Anthropic (after taking some time to recharge).”

He also thanked DeepMind and its chief executive, Demis Hassabis, for giving him the opportunity to lead the AlphaFold project early in his career.

“Demis Hassabis took a real chance letting me lead the AlphaFold team just six months after finishing my PhD, and the entire GDM team taught me so much about how to do great science,” Jumper said.

Hassabis responded to the announcement by describing their collaboration as an “extraordinary partnership”.

“What we achieved with AlphaFold changed the world and showed the field what was possible with AI for science and medicine, lighting the way for how AI can benefit humanity,” he wrote.

AlphaFold revolutionised biological research

Jumper and Hassabis were jointly awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on AlphaFold, an AI system capable of predicting the three-dimensional structures of proteins from their amino acid sequences.

The breakthrough enabled scientists to predict the structure of more than 200 million proteins known to science, including those found in plants, animals and microorganisms.

Researchers have described AlphaFold as one of the most significant scientific advances in modern biology, dramatically accelerating research in medicine, drug discovery and life sciences.

The technology has helped scientists cut months and, in some cases, years from the research process.

Another high-profile departure for Google

Jumper’s move comes at a time when Google is facing increasing competition from rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

It is also the second major departure from Google in recent days. Earlier this week, prominent AI engineer Noam Shazeer reportedly left the company for OpenAI.

Industry observers believe the departures may increase pressure on Google as it seeks to maintain its leadership position in artificial intelligence, particularly in areas such as AI-powered coding tools and enterprise applications.

Reports have suggested that some employees and executives at DeepMind had expressed concerns over the company’s ability to develop and market certain AI products for business customers.

Intense competition for AI talent

The global race for AI dominance has sparked fierce competition among technology companies to recruit top researchers and engineers.

Companies including Google, Anthropic and OpenAI are investing heavily in talent acquisition as they develop increasingly sophisticated AI systems.

The competition is not limited to the United States. Chinese AI companies have also been taking steps to retain key personnel amid growing global demand for experienced AI researchers.

At present, it remains unclear when John Jumper will formally join Anthropic or what role he will assume at the company.

However, his departure from Google DeepMind marks another significant shift in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape and underscores the growing importance of scientific talent in shaping the future of AI.
