A nurse in Florida may suffer permanent blindness after a vicious attack by a patient at Palms West Hospital left nearly every bone in her face shattered, as per an arrest affidavit.

Palm Beach County deputies arrived at the Loxahatchee medical facility on Tuesday around 1:20 p.m. after reports that 33-year-old Stephen Scantlebury had violently assaulted a nurse in a third-floor room.

Scantlebury, who was under observation due to Florida’s Baker Act, allegedly leaped from his bed onto the healthcare worker, launching a relentless assault. A witness inside the room rushed to get help, while another shouted for him to stop. Despite the pleas, he continued raining blows on the victim’s face before fleeing the hospital and running into traffic on Southern Boulevard. Authorities swiftly apprehended him.

The nurse, whose name remains undisclosed, was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in critical condition. Medical evaluations revealed extensive facial fractures, with doctors fearing she may lose sight in both eyes.

HCA Florida Healthcare released a statement expressing deep concern for their colleague’s well-being, offering support to shaken staff, and commending law enforcement for swiftly securing the suspect.

Scantlebury was arrested and remains in custody without bond, facing a charge of second-degree attempted murder. He is currently undergoing medical evaluation.
