The Obama family is mourning the death of Sunny, their beloved Portuguese Water Dog who spent 13 years as a cherished companion to former US President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters.
Barack Obama announced Sunny’s death on September 16, remembering the dog as a much-loved member of the family who brought energy, affection and happiness into their lives.
Sunny became a familiar White House companion
Sunny joined the Obama family in 2013, during Barack Obama’s second term as US President. The Portuguese Water Dog quickly became a familiar presence alongside the family’s other dog, Bo.
The two dogs were often seen playing on the White House grounds and became popular with staff and visitors. Sunny was known for her lively personality and playful nature, frequently running across the South Lawn and chasing squirrels and birds.
Despite being a water dog, Sunny reportedly did not particularly enjoy getting wet.
A dog remembered with affection
Sunny shared many special moments with the Obama family, including family celebrations and White House events. She also met several prominent visitors during her years at the presidential residence.
Her close bond with Bo was particularly memorable. Bo died in 2021 at the age of 12, and Sunny continued to be a much-loved companion to the family.
