Oman: The 16-member crew of the Comoros-flagged oil tanker “Prestige Falcon,” which capsized off the coast of Oman, remains missing, the country’s maritime security centre reported on Tuesday, a day after the incident.
The crew included 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans, according to a post by the Omani maritime security centre on the social media platform X.
In a separate statement to Reuters, the centre mentioned that the vessel is still “submerged, inverted.” They did not confirm whether the ship had stabilized or if there was any oil leakage into the sea.
Shipping data from LSEG indicated that the tanker was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden when it capsized near Oman’s major industrial port of Duqm. The vessel, built in 2007, is a 117-meter-long oil products tanker typically used for short coastal voyages.
Omani authorities launched a search-and-rescue operation in coordination with maritime authorities, as reported by the state’s news agency on Monday.
The port of Duqm, situated on Oman’s southwest coast, is near the sultanate’s significant oil and gas projects, including a major oil refinery that is part of Duqm’s expansive industrial zone, the largest economic project in Oman.
