A one-year-old boy died in a tragic accident after becoming trapped in a toy slide at a daycare facility in Washington County, Missouri, prompting renewed concerns over child safety in unlicensed childcare settings.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred late Thursday morning at a daycare being run out of a woman’s home, located just outside the Potosi city limits. Authorities said the child slipped through a small opening in an indoor playground slide, causing his head to become lodged and restricting his airway, which led to oxygen deprivation.
How the accident unfolded
Sheriff Scott Reed said the slide had a small gap at the bottom of its railing — approximately five inches tall — large enough for the child’s body to pass through but not his head. A call was received reporting a child who was not breathing, and the caregiver attempted life-saving measures before deputies arrived.
Two deputies immediately performed CPR upon reaching the scene, but the child was later pronounced dead. Sheriff Reed described the incident as deeply distressing, particularly for the responding officers, both of whom have young children.
Daycare unlicensed but legal
Officials confirmed the daycare was not licensed, but under Missouri law, a licence is not required if care is provided to four or fewer children. Child Care Aware of Missouri noted that licensed facilities undergo inspections twice a year, including safety checks on play equipment.
The organisation also highlighted that many rural counties face shortages of licensed childcare, often forcing families to rely on informal or unlicensed options.
Investigation underway
The incident is being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Division of Family Services. A preliminary autopsy has ruled the death accidental, though a full report is awaited.
Authorities said the case underscores the importance of constant supervision and safe play equipment for infants and toddlers.
