The 97th Academy Award nominations were revealed on Thursday in Los Angeles, with the musical crime drama Emilia Pérez leading the pack, receiving 13 nominations. One of the most groundbreaking moments was the nomination of Karla Sofía Gascón, who made history as the first transgender performer to be nominated for Best Actress.
While Emilia Pérez garnered the most attention, some notable omissions stirred conversation, such as Selena Gomez’s snub for Best Supporting Actress. Despite her recognition from both the British Academy and the Golden Globes, she failed to secure a nomination in this category.
In other notable nominations, the epic The Brutalist and the musical Wicked were each nominated for 10 Oscars, while the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and the papal thriller Conclave followed with eight nods each.
The 2025 nominations also saw many fresh faces. Sebastian Stan received a Best Actor nod for The Apprentice, and Jeremy Strong earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Other newcomers in the Best Supporting Actor category include Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), and Guy Pearce (The Brutalist).
Among the first-time nominees in the Best Actress category were Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). For Best Supporting Actress, new nominees included Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez).
The nominations were announced by Bowen Yang (Wicked) and Rachel Sennott (Saturday Night Live). Despite delays caused by the Los Angeles wildfires, the Academy is set to move forward with the Oscars ceremony on Sunday, March 2, and has emphasized the importance of community and relief efforts in the wake of the devastating fires.
