In a historic first for the Arabian Peninsula, the Our Lady of Arabia Church has been elevated to the rank of a minor basilica, marking a significant moment for Catholics across the Gulf region.

Historic proclamation in Ahmadi

The proclamation was formally made on Friday by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who arrived in Kuwait on Thursday for a visit of both ecclesial and diplomatic importance. The elevation underscores growing ties between Holy See and Kuwait.

With this status, the basilica is called to serve as a model of prayer, liturgical life and ecclesial communion. It is also expected to become a pilgrimage destination for Catholics from across the Gulf, symbolising dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. On designated days, the faithful may receive a plenary indulgence under conditions set by the Church.

Strengthening Vatican–Kuwait relations

During his stay, Cardinal Parolin is holding bilateral meetings with Kuwaiti officials to further strengthen friendship and cooperation. Kuwait holds a unique place in Vatican diplomacy, having been the first Gulf nation to establish diplomatic relations with the Holy See in 1968, and it continues to host an apostolic nunciature. The Vatican has often acknowledged Kuwait’s respect for religious diversity and interfaith harmony.

‘Mother Church’ of Catholics in Kuwait

The elevation was announced earlier in June 2025 by the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, recognising the church’s historical and pastoral significance. This is the first minor basilica in the Arabian Peninsula.

Founded on land originally set aside for foreign workers, the church’s first structure dates back to 1948, with the present building completed in 1957 as a donation from the Kuwait Oil Company. Over decades, it has welcomed believers of many nationalities, earning its place as the “mother church” of Catholics in Kuwait.
