Lahore: Servant of God Akash Bashir, a young Pakistani Catholic whose heroic sacrifice saved hundreds of worshippers during a terrorist attack in 2015, continues on the path towards becoming Pakistan’s first Blessed.
A proud alumnus of Don Bosco Technical Institute, Lahore, Akash’s life and witness of faith have inspired Catholics across the world. His cause for Beatification and Canonisation is currently under study by the Vatican following the completion of the diocesan phase of the process.
A heroic sacrifice that saved hundreds
On March 15, 2015, during Sunday Mass at St. John’s Catholic Church in Youhanabad, Lahore, a suicide bomber attempted to enter the packed church.
Realising the imminent danger, the then 20-year-old Akash courageously confronted the attacker and is reported to have declared, “I will die, but I will not let you enter the church.”
Moments later, the bomber detonated the explosives, killing both himself and Akash. His selfless act prevented the attacker from entering the church and is believed to have saved the lives of hundreds of worshippers gathered inside.
Cause for sainthood progresses
Recognising his extraordinary witness of faith, the Catholic Church officially opened Akash Bashir’s Cause for Beatification and Canonisation on January 31, 2022, conferring upon him the title “Servant of God.”
The diocesan phase of the cause concluded on March 15, 2024, and the documentation has since been forwarded to the Vatican for further examination.
If the Holy Father formally recognises Akash’s death as martyrdom, he may be beatified without the requirement of a confirmed miracle, in accordance with the Church’s norms for martyrs. If beatified, he will become Pakistan’s first Blessed, marking a historic milestone for the Catholic Church in the country.
A lasting legacy of faith
Remembered as a courageous young man who embodied the values of St John Bosco through faith, service and love for others, Akash Bashir continues to inspire the Salesian Family and Christians around the world. His unwavering commitment to protecting fellow worshippers remains a powerful testimony to sacrificial love and Christian witness.
