Two crew members were killed after a private jet crashed while attempting an emergency landing at an airport in the Dominican Republic, authorities confirmed.

The aircraft, a Gulfstream G200 business jet registered in the United States, was en route to Austin, Texas, when it reportedly experienced serious mechanical problems shortly after take-off. The crew declared an emergency and decided to return to La Romana International Airport.

Jet catches fire after landing attempt

Videos circulating on social media showed the aircraft engulfed in flames following a rough landing at the airport. Thick black smoke could be seen rising into the sky as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Officials said the crash occurred during the landing attempt, triggering a fire that rapidly spread through the aircraft.

The pilot and co-pilot, who were the only occupants on board, died in the accident. No passengers were travelling on the flight.

Investigation launched

Authorities have initiated a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) said emergency protocols were activated immediately after the incident and confirmed that relevant agencies were examining the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Commission has also joined the probe.

Airport serves major tourist hub

La Romana International Airport serves one of the Dominican Republic’s most popular tourist regions and is a key gateway for international visitors.

The accident comes nearly five years after a private aircraft crash near Santo Domingo in 2021 that claimed nine lives.

Authorities are expected to release additional findings as the investigation progresses.
