A Cessna 208B Grand Caravan carrying nine passengers and one pilot vanished while flying from Unalakleet to Nome, Alaska, on Thursday at around 4 PM local time. The Alaska Department of Public Safety reported that the aircraft, operated by Bering Air, last transmitted data over Norton Sound at 3:16 PM before disappearing.

Search and rescue teams are focusing on the last known coordinates, with efforts complicated by poor weather conditions. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department has initiated a ground search, while air searches remain limited. Officials have advised residents against forming their own search teams due to the hazardous conditions.

This incident comes amid a tragic week for aviation, following a Philadelphia plane crash that claimed four lives and a mid-air collision in Washington, DC, killing 67.

Unalakleet, a small community of 690 people, lies 150 miles southeast of Nome. Nome, situated just south of the Arctic Circle, is famous as the final destination of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
