Pope Leo XIV has urged bishops of Central Africa to become strong instruments of reconciliation and peace as their societies face deep challenges such as tribalism, interethnic conflict, war and family breakdown.
In a message sent to the bishops through Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope acknowledged the “urgent issues” confronting pastors in the region and emphasised that the Gospel calls for the “pacification of hearts” amid social and political turmoil.
The message was addressed to Bishop Martin Waïngue Bani, president of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of the Central African Region, and was read at the opening of its 13th General Assembly in Chad.
Praising pastoral dedication
Pope Leo XIV expressed spiritual closeness to the bishops, assuring them of his prayers and gratitude for their daily service to the faithful. He also acknowledged the contributions of priests, deacons, religious men and women, and lay members who support the Church’s mission in the region.
He praised the bishops’ collective efforts to strengthen faith, promote peace and justice, protect human life, care for conflict victims, and defend creation, noting that their spirit of fraternity gives vitality to the Church.
Relevance of Ecclesia in Africa
Recalling the upcoming 31st anniversary of the apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in Africa, the Pope said the document remains deeply relevant. He described the Church in Africa as “living, strong and dynamic,” and reaffirmed its mission to read the signs of the times with hope.
Gospel not to be diluted
On inculturation, Pope Leo clarified that it does not mean adapting the Gospel to the world, but discovering within each culture ways to proclaim the unchanging Word of God.
Standing with the vulnerable
The Pope urged bishops to listen attentively to young people seeking better futures and to show compassion towards refugees and displaced persons affected by ongoing crises. He encouraged them to be a healing presence, offering comfort and hope.
Concluding his message, Pope Leo XIV entrusted the bishops’ mission to the Virgin Mary, Star of Evangelisation, and imparted his Apostolic Blessing on the Church across Central Africa.
