Prince William has served Christmas lunch at The Passage, a London-based homelessness charity he first visited as a child with his mother, Princess Diana. Reflecting on the lasting impact these visits had on him, the Prince shared how they helped him “see outside the palace walls.”
William, who first visited The Passage over 30 years ago, served food alongside volunteers, including carrots and parsnips, while engaging with guests. In a heartwarming moment captured in a video posted to the Prince and Princess of Wales’s X account, William shared a hug with the charity’s head chef, Claudette Hawkins, and congratulated a client on his engagement. The client, sporting a Boston Celtics Christmas jumper, joyfully told the Prince, “I’m getting married,” to which William responded with a smile, “I know, I did hear about that, and congratulations.”
The Passage provides vital support to London’s homeless, offering friendship, practical help, and assistance in securing accommodation. William has often spoken of the profound influence his mother had on his commitment to addressing homelessness, recalling how her work shaped his empathy and awareness of the issues. In a recent documentary, he reflected on his first visit as a child, describing how it was an eye-opening experience, seeing people living in circumstances very different from his own.
As an adult, William has continued to support The Passage, becoming its official patron in 2019. He hopes to pass on his mother’s legacy of compassion to his own children.
