Internet-famous baby monkey Punch-kun has once again won hearts, this time with an adorable “bye-bye” wave to visitors at closing time.

Born in July 2025, the tiny Japanese macaque had a difficult start to life at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Japan. Abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, Punch was initially cared for by zoo staff before being gradually introduced to the troop.

From hardship to hope

Early videos showing Punch being dragged and bullied by adult macaques — and clinging to a stuffed orangutan toy for comfort — went viral, drawing sympathy from viewers worldwide. The plush toy became his constant companion as he slowly learned to socialise with the other monkeys.

Clips shared by the zoo earlier this year captured Punch dragging his toy around the enclosure and cautiously interacting with his peers. These moments transformed him into an internet sensation and significantly boosted visitor numbers.

Health concerns addressed

Recent public attention has also brought questions about the health of the macaque troop. In a statement posted on social media in February, the zoo reassured visitors that veterinarians had confirmed the monkeys’ food intake and weight were appropriate, with no clear signs of illness.

Some hair loss noticed among the macaques was attributed mainly to excessive grooming — a common behaviour during colder months when monkeys huddle together for warmth.

Welfare remains priority

Zoo authorities said animal welfare remains their top concern. Four back rooms are kept open for Punch, and environmental enrichment efforts are ongoing. Trees within the enclosure serve as climbing and play tools, particularly for younger monkeys.

As Punch continues to grow stronger and more confident, his simple closing-time wave has become a symbol of resilience — a small gesture that has once again captured global affection.
