Moscow: Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict to mark Orthodox Easter, calling on Ukraine to reciprocate the move.

According to the Kremlin, the ceasefire will be in effect from 4:00 pm on April 11 until the end of April 12, coinciding with the Easter celebrations observed in both Russia and Ukraine.

Order issued to halt military operations

The Kremlin stated that Russia’s Defence Minister Andrei Belousov has instructed Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov to suspend military operations across all fronts during the specified period.

“Troops are to be ready to eliminate all possible provocations by the enemy as well as any aggressive actions,” the statement added, indicating that while operations would pause, forces would remain on alert.

Appeal to Ukraine for reciprocal action

Russia has expressed hope that Ukraine will adopt a similar ceasefire during the Easter period. “We proceed on the basis that the Ukrainian side will follow the example of the Russian Federation,” the Kremlin said.

However, there has been no immediate response from Volodymyr Zelenskyy or Ukrainian authorities regarding the proposal.

Previous calls for ceasefire

Interestingly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier proposed an Easter ceasefire, urging a temporary halt to hostilities. He had also accused Russia of continuing drone and air attacks on Ukrainian cities despite such calls.

The current announcement by Russia comes amid ongoing tensions and continued fighting across multiple fronts.

Religious significance of Easter

Orthodox Easter holds deep religious importance in both Russia and Ukraine, where Orthodox Christianity is widely followed. This year, the festival falls on April 12, making it a significant occasion for millions of believers.

Temporary ceasefires during religious or cultural festivals have occasionally been observed in conflict zones, although their effectiveness has often depended on mutual agreement and adherence by both sides.

Uncertainty over implementation

While the announcement signals a potential pause in hostilities, its success will depend on Ukraine’s response and the situation on the ground. Past ceasefire declarations in the conflict have seen limited compliance, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

Conclusion

Russia’s announcement of an Easter ceasefire introduces a brief window for de-escalation in the ongoing conflict. However, with no confirmation from Ukraine yet, the impact of the move remains uncertain as the situation continues to evolve.
