London: Victor Riparbelli, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of AI video platform Synthesia, has emerged as one of Europe’s leading technology entrepreneurs after transforming a startup rejected by more than 100 investors into a company valued at $4 billion.
Long before generative artificial intelligence gained global attention through ChatGPT, Riparbelli believed AI-generated videos would revolutionise business communication. However, convincing investors of that vision proved difficult, with many questioning the market potential for the technology.
Early vision pays off
Founded in London in 2017, Synthesia developed AI technology capable of creating realistic videos from text using digital avatars. Instead of focusing on entertainment, the company identified a growing demand among businesses for faster and more cost-effective ways to produce training, onboarding and internal communication videos.
The strategic shift helped the startup establish itself in the enterprise AI market, attracting companies seeking scalable video production without cameras, actors or production crews.
Funding fuels rapid growth
According to reports, Synthesia recently achieved a valuation of $4 billion after securing fresh investment. The funding round also included a secondary share sale, allowing some early employees and investors to sell part of their holdings while remaining invested in the company’s future growth.
The achievement places Synthesia among Europe’s most valuable artificial intelligence startups amid increasing global investment in AI technologies.
Persistence behind the success
Reflecting on the company’s journey, Riparbelli has said entrepreneurs should not expect every investor to immediately understand ambitious ideas. He believes resilience and conviction are essential, as many breakthrough innovations are initially dismissed before gaining widespread acceptance.
Synthesia’s growth from repeated investor rejection to a multibillion-dollar valuation highlights the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and demonstrates how persistence, strategic planning and long-term vision can help transform an unconventional idea into a global business success.
