A Long Island community is mourning the death of a retired police officer who collapsed and died while attempting to help others during a powerful winter storm that swept across the northeastern United States last weekend.

Collapsed while volunteering at church

Roger McGovern, 60, a retired sergeant of the New York City Police Department, suffered a fatal medical emergency on Sunday while preparing to shovel snow outside Our Lady of Victory Church in Floral Park, according to local reports.

McGovern, an usher at the church and an active member of the Knights of Columbus, had walked nearly a mile through harsh, freezing conditions to help clear pathways so parishioners could safely attend Sunday Mass.

Fell ill moments before starting work

According to his close friend Kevin Troy, McGovern had spoken to the parish priest and volunteered to shovel the sidewalks before services began. However, moments later — even before starting the work — he collapsed.

He was rushed to hospital but could not be revived. Reports indicated that he suffered a heart attack.

Tributes pour in for life of service

McGovern’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes highlighting his lifelong dedication to public service. The Sergeants Benevolent Association honoured him in a social media post, noting that his commitment to helping others continued long after retirement.

“After a career spent in service to this city, Sergeant McGovern passed away while helping his community during the recent snowstorm,” the association said, adding that his dedication never faded.

McGovern retired from the NYPD in 2008, the department confirmed.

Storm leaves trail of destruction

His death comes amid a deadly winter storm that brought heavy snowfall and bitter cold across large parts of the northeastern US. New York City officials reported at least eight storm-related deaths locally, with snow accumulation ranging between 8 and 15 inches in several areas. Nationwide, at least 36 deaths across 14 states have been linked to the extreme weather.

Church officials have not issued a formal statement so far. For many in Floral Park, McGovern’s final act stands as a reflection of a life defined by service, sacrifice and community spirit.
