Russia announced on Tuesday that its air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed 46 Ukrainian drones in a significant overnight offensive. The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that 41 of these unmanned aerial vehicles were neutralized over the Belgorod region, which shares a border with Ukraine. The remaining drones were reportedly brought down over the Bryansk, Kursk, and Oryol regions.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod, confirmed via Telegram that the assault left one individual injured. Additionally, several residential properties in the region suffered structural damage due to the drone debris.
In Bryansk, Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported no immediate injuries or significant property damage from the attack.
So far, Ukrainian officials have not issued a statement regarding the drone operation. However, Kyiv has consistently justified its cross-border strikes by stating they are aimed at crippling Russia’s military infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities argue these attacks serve as retaliation against Moscow’s persistent airstrikes and missile barrages, which have battered Ukraine throughout the three-year conflict.
Drone strikes deep inside Russian territory have become more frequent in recent months, as Ukraine seeks to counterbalance Russia’s relentless pressure on the frontlines. Despite Russia’s claims of neutralizing the threat, Ukrainian forces have remained silent on specific targets or intentions.
The overnight drone raid highlights the escalating tit-for-tat tactics between the two nations, with civilian areas on both sides continuing to suffer the consequences.
