Kyiv : A Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in central Kyiv on Friday, September 4, in an attack that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a direct strike on the agency’s leadership.
The drone hit the SBU’s main building on Volodymyrska Street, opposite the historic St Sophia Cathedral. Zelenskyy said the drone was aimed at the office of acting SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad.
The attack came as diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war were again gaining attention, with US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner expected to travel to Moscow and Kyiv for discussions on the conflict.
SBU headquarters hit in central Kyiv
According to Zelenskyy, the Russian drone struck the central SBU building in the heart of Kyiv.
The building is located on Volodymyrska Street, close to the Golden Gate and directly across from St Sophia Cathedral, one of the Ukrainian capital’s most prominent historic landmarks.
Zelenskyy said the drone had been directed specifically towards the office of the head of the security service.
The strike caused heavy black smoke to rise above the area and prompted emergency services to respond to the scene.
The SBU is Ukraine’s main domestic security and counter-intelligence agency and has played a major role in the country’s war effort against Russia.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko initially reported that five people had been injured, according to Reuters.
