Tokyo: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence during a recent visit to Tokyo. Speaking at the unveiling of a bust of Gandhi at Freedom Plaza in Edogawa, Jaishankar emphasized that Gandhi’s principles are increasingly pertinent in today’s world, which is fraught with conflict, polarization, and violence.
Jaishankar, who arrived in Japan from Laos for a two-day visit ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, was greeted by India’s Ambassador to Japan, Sibi George. During the ceremony, he discussed the significance of Gandhi’s teachings in the contemporary context.
“In an era marked by widespread conflict and division, it is crucial to remember Gandhiji’s belief that true solutions do not arise from warfare. His message—that no period should be defined by war—remains as relevant today as it did 80 years ago,” Jaishankar said.

He also underscored Gandhi’s forward-thinking approach to sustainability. “Gandhi was a pioneer of sustainable development long before it became a global priority. His vision for living in harmony with nature is something we should all integrate into our daily lives,” Jaishankar noted.
Jaishankar further praised Gandhi’s advocacy for inclusiveness, a principle that continues to resonate globally and within India.
In a social media post, Jaishankar expressed his gratitude to those who attended the event, including Edogawa Mayor Takeshi Saito, Parliamentary Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Masahiro Komura, and Member of Parliament Hideo Onishi. He also acknowledged the Indian community in Tokyo and announced that the nearby park would soon be named Gandhi Park.
Jaishankar reflected on the broader impact of Gandhi’s legacy, stating, “Gandhi’s achievements transcend time and have gained even greater significance. His teachings are as important now as ever. This statue in Edogawa, often called Little India, symbolizes the deepening bonds between India and Japan.”
He concluded by noting that Gandhi’s role in India’s independence movement had a global impact, setting in motion a wave of decolonization and contributing to today’s shifting geopolitical landscape. “The independence of India was a pivotal moment that influenced global developments, including the transition from G7 to G20,” Jaishankar said.
