A tragic shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia claimed the lives of 10 people, including the suspect, and left at least 25 others injured on Wednesday, police confirmed.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said six people were found dead inside the school. One victim died while being transported to hospital, while two others were located deceased at a nearby residence in the community. Two individuals were airlifted with serious or life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, earlier described in an alert as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress, was found dead within the school premises with what authorities believe to be a self-inflicted injury. Police are continuing to determine whether anyone else was involved.
Shelter-in-place order lifted
The incident occurred around 1.20 pm local time. Tumbler Ridge police issued an alert at 2 pm, urging residents to shelter in place, lock doors and avoid going outdoors. The order remained in effect for approximately five hours before being lifted.
Around 100 people, including staff and students, were safely evacuated from the school, RCMP North District Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd said. Additional police and emergency resources were deployed from neighbouring regions to assist in the response.
The school, which serves about 175 students from Grades 7 to 12, will remain closed for the week.
Community in shock
A Class 9 student told local media he hid inside a classroom closet during the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive.
Larry Neufeld, MLA for Peace River South, expressed condolences, stating that the impact on the small, close-knit community of around 2,400 residents would be deeply felt. British Columbia Premier David Eby assured full government support for affected families and the wider community.
Police investigations remain ongoing as officials continue to gather information and provide assistance to victims and families.
