A seven-year-old Indian-origin boy in the United Kingdom has achieved an extraordinary academic feat by scoring 196 out of 240 in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Higher Mathematics examination, securing Grade 8, equivalent to an A.
Jivyan Reddy Dhruva appeared for the examination in May and received his result last week alongside students who normally take the GCSE at around the age of 16.
“I felt really excited when I saw my result. My parents were very happy, and they hugged me,” Jivyan told PTI.
Young maths enthusiast had aimed even higher
Although pleased with his achievement, Jivyan initially hoped to secure Grade 9.
“I wanted a Grade 9 so I was a little disappointed at first, but then I was very happy that I got Grade 8,” he said.
For Jivyan, mathematics is about solving challenging problems rather than simply memorising formulas. He enjoys finding different ways to reach an answer and has already set his sights on learning A-level mathematics and further mathematics.
Home education lets him learn at his pace
Jivyan attended a mainstream primary school in London until February this year. His parents then chose home education to allow him to learn at a pace better suited to his abilities.
His parents, originally from Andhra Pradesh, have lived in South Ruislip in west London for nearly five years.
His father told PTI that Jivyan’s interest in numbers became apparent even before nursery. He said the boy quickly understood mathematical concepts and often asked questions that went beyond what he had been taught.
Family keeps childhood at the centre
Home education requires considerable coordination from Jivyan’s parents, but the family has developed a routine that balances advanced learning with free time and childhood experiences.
They also use AI as a learning tool to make some subjects more interactive. At the same time, Jivyan continues to spend time with other children through clubs and activities.
He enjoys chess, football, tennis and other hobbies.
Dreams go beyond mathematics
Jivyan hopes to invent robots and other technology that can help people when he grows up. He is particularly interested in creating useful and affordable technology that can be accessible to everyone.
His parents, however, want him to have the freedom to discover his future career in his own time.
For now, the seven-year-old’s remarkable mathematics achievement is being balanced with friendships, hobbies and the everyday experiences of childhood.
