Washington: A major security scare unfolded at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner after an armed suspect opened fire near the venue, prompting the evacuation of US President Donald Trump and other top officials.
The incident occurred outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and senior cabinet members were present for the high-profile gathering.
Suspect charged security checkpoint
According to President Trump, the suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen (31) from California, approached a security checkpoint carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives.
“He was heavily armed and charged a checkpoint before being taken down by very brave Secret Service personnel,” Trump said while addressing reporters later at the White House.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect fired at security personnel before being subdued and taken into custody.
Secret Service agent injured but safe
One United States Secret Service officer was shot at close range during the confrontation. However, the bullet struck the officer’s protective vest, preventing serious injury.
Trump said the officer was “in great shape” and credited the bulletproof vest with saving his life. Officials later confirmed that the injured agent remained in stable condition and in good spirits.
Panic inside event hall
Gunshots triggered panic among the approximately 2,600 attendees inside the ballroom. Eyewitness videos showed guests taking cover under tables as security personnel rushed to secure the area.
Shouts of “Get down” were heard as armed security teams entered the hall and formed protective cordons. Top officials, including Trump and his family, were quickly escorted out of the venue.
The dinner event was subsequently cancelled.
Investigation underway
Law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have launched an investigation into the incident. Officials said the suspect is believed to be a “lone wolf” attacker, though his exact motive remains unclear.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that charges would be filed soon, with investigators analysing ballistic evidence and conducting witness interviews.
Washington interim police chief Jeffery Carroll stated that the suspect had been taken to a hospital for evaluation following his arrest.
Was Trump the target?
When asked whether he was the intended target, Trump responded, “I guess,” while adding that investigators would determine the motive. He also described the attacker as a “lone wolf actor,” though officials have not ruled out other possibilities.
Trump noted that he and Melania Trump were “very quickly rushed off the stage” as security responded to the threat.
Renewed concerns over security
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security at high-profile public events. Trump remarked that the venue was “not a particularly secure building” and called for enhanced protection measures.
The scare comes amid heightened tensions following previous assassination attempts targeting Trump in 2024, including a shooting at a campaign rally in Butler and another incident near his golf course in West Palm Beach.
Notably, the Washington Hilton has historical significance, having been the site of the Attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan.
Conclusion
The swift response by security agencies prevented what could have been a far more serious incident. While no fatalities were reported, the shooting has once again highlighted vulnerabilities at major public events and the need for constant vigilance. Authorities continue to investigate the motive as the nation assesses the implications of the security breach.
