A devastating train collision near Córdoba in southern Spain has claimed at least 42 lives, but amid the widespread destruction, a six-year-old girl survived in what many have described as nothing short of a miracle.

Child found alive amid wreckage

The crash occurred on Sunday when two trains derailed and collided under circumstances that are still under investigation. Emergency responders arriving at the scene were confronted with extensive damage and dozens of casualties.

Amid the chaos, the young girl managed to escape through a shattered train window. She was later found barefoot on the tracks by a Civil Guard officer. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors treated her for minor head injuries, requiring just three stitches. A family member later confirmed that she is now in stable condition and recovering well.

Entire family lost in crash

Tragically, the girl’s parents, brother, and cousin were among those killed in the collision. According to officials, they were seated in the front carriages, which bore the brunt of the impact when the oncoming train derailed and struck their train.

The child is currently staying with her grandparents at a hotel in Córdoba, the nearest major city to the crash site, as authorities assist surviving relatives.

Community and national response

José Carlos Hernández, mayor of the girl’s hometown of Punta Umbría, expressed grief and relief while leading a minute of silence for the victims. “There were many who did not survive, but there were also miracles — like the girl who is safe,” he said.

Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the accident as “very strange,” noting that both the trains and tracks were relatively new. Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the collision.

Royal visit and investigation

On Tuesday, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visited the crash site and met survivors, expressing solidarity with affected families. More than 120 people were injured in the accident, many of them seriously.

Authorities said a full technical and safety investigation is underway.
