On Thursday, July 17, 2025, the extreme sports world was shaken by the untimely death of Felix Baumgartner, the renowned Austrian skydiver who made history in 2012 by breaking the sound barrier during a free fall. He died in a paragliding accident in Porto Sant’Elpidio, Italy, at the age of 56.

Baumgartner took off on a powered paraglider flight around 4 PM local time. Before takeoff, he mentioned “too much wind” in an Instagram post. Witnesses reported that he appeared to lose control mid-air before crashing into a hotel pool at Le Mimose. While a hotel employee sustained minor injuries, Baumgartner was tragically pronounced dead on-site. Reports suggest a possible medical emergency, such as a cardiac arrest, may have contributed to the crash.

Porto Sant’Elpidio’s mayor, Massimiliano Ciarpella, expressed heartfelt condolences, saying the town lost “a symbol of courage and passion for flight.”

Globally known as “Fearless Felix,” Baumgartner etched his name in history in 2012 when he leaped from 39 kilometers (24 miles) above New Mexico, reaching 1,343 km/h, and becoming the first human to break the sound barrier in free fall. His career also included iconic stunts like BASE jumping from the Petronas Towers and Christ the Redeemer, and flying a carbon-fibre wingsuit across the English Channel.

Red Bull, his long-time sponsor, confirmed his death. Tributes poured in from fans and fellow adventurers worldwide, honoring a man who lived — and flew — without limits.
