The ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh has presented significant challenges for India, particularly in the areas of geopolitics, internal security, and communal harmony. The unexpected exit of Sheikh Hasina, a long-time ally of India, has created instability in Dhaka, leading to heightened concerns along the India-Bangladesh border. This instability has prompted increased vigilance, particularly over the risks of illegal immigration and its socio-political implications. From August to December, border security operations led to the apprehension of 1,393 Bangladeshi nationals, highlighting the effectiveness of the Border Security Force (BSF). Despite this, nearly 60% of transborder crimes occur in un-fenced regions, prompting the BSF to begin construction of a single-row fence, which has sparked diplomatic tension with Bangladesh’s Border Guards.
Beyond border security issues, rising religious polarisation between the two countries threatens to erode the people-to-people (P2P) connections that have historically strengthened bilateral ties. India’s Ministry of External Affairs recently expressed the desire to steer relations in a positive direction, underscoring the need for P2P initiatives to rebuild trust. In this context, Border Haats, cross-border marketplaces that facilitate trade and cultural exchange, remain essential platforms for fostering cooperation. These hubs, which reflect shared historical and cultural ties, continued to thrive even amid political uncertainties.
The successful reopening of Border Haats, like the Bholaganj market in Meghalaya in May 2023 and the Srinagar market in Tripura, highlights their enduring relevance. These platforms symbolize cooperation and trust, proving resilient despite political challenges. However, strengthening India-Bangladesh ties requires a more comprehensive approach, integrating cultural exchanges, academic collaborations, and youth initiatives. By reinforcing these grassroots connections, both countries can counter divisive narratives and pave the way for a more stable future.
