A fatal stabbing near the Lincoln University campus has left the academic community in shock after 21-year-old Kevaughn Goldson died from multiple stab wounds early Monday morning.
According to the Jefferson City Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at 1.09 am and found Goldson suffering from stab injuries to his chest and back at an off-campus residence. He was airlifted to University of Missouri Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Suspect arrested, murder charge filed
Authorities arrested Denita Jackson (21), a sprinter on the university’s track and field team, at the scene. Prosecutors have charged her with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She remains in custody at the Cole County Jail.
Police confirmed that a roommate present in the apartment was not injured and has not been charged.
Lincoln University released a statement expressing condolences and assuring support services for affected students and staff.
Alleged sequence of events
Court documents state that Jackson told police she had returned home early from work and discovered Goldson, whom she identified as her boyfriend, inside her roommate’s bedroom. She reportedly unlocked the door and alleged that a confrontation ensued.
According to her statement, a physical altercation followed, during which she claimed she was assaulted. She told investigators she retrieved a knife from under the bed and stabbed Goldson before calling 911.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing, with officers reviewing forensic evidence and witness accounts.
The incident has deeply unsettled the campus community, raising questions as authorities continue to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.
