A 14-year-old boy in the United States has touched hearts across the internet after using his Make-A-Wish opportunity not for himself but to help hundreds of homeless people in his community.
Jude Baker, a teenager from Georgia, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects bones or surrounding tissues, when he was just 12 years old.
Soon after his diagnosis, Baker began chemotherapy, a treatment he later described as one of the toughest experiences of his life.
A wish to help others
Because of his illness, Baker qualified for a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organisation that grants special wishes to children aged between 3 and 17 who are battling critical illnesses.
While many children ask to meet celebrities or travel to dream destinations, Baker made an unusual request — he wanted to help homeless people in his area.
“I got out of my version of suffering, and I want to help others who are going through their own struggles,” he said while explaining his decision.
Helping hundreds in need
With the help of the foundation and local volunteers, Baker’s wish turned into a large community effort.
Volunteers collected sleeping bags, packed backpacks with essential supplies, and prepared hot meals for homeless individuals in the area.
The initiative ultimately helped more than 300 people, offering them food, warmth and basic necessities.
Emily Campbell, a Make-A-Wish coordinator in Georgia, said Baker’s request stood out.
“His only wish was to give back to his community,” she said, noting that such requests are rare since children are usually encouraged to choose personal experiences.
Now in remission
After months of treatment, Baker is now in remission, a milestone that has brought hope to his family and supporters.
Despite his own battle with cancer, he hopes his story inspires others to show kindness and help those in need.
“It doesn’t have to come from a wish,” Baker said. “You can help too.”
Inspired by the teenager’s generosity, a local business owner has also started a fundraising campaign to support Baker and his family, hoping to give them a chance to take a memorable trip together after years of hospital visits and treatment.
The campaign aims to raise $5,000 to help the family enjoy time together away from medical worries.
