A ninth-grade student and his mother are being widely praised after their swift action saved a neighbour’s life during a house fire in Melville, Long Island.
Quick response in a critical moment
Fourteen-year-old Jovani Moss noticed flames coming from a house across the street while waiting for his school bus early Tuesday morning.
Realising the seriousness of the situation, he immediately alerted his mother, Natechia Campbel-Moss, and called emergency services.
Brave rescue effort
While Jovani contacted authorities, his mother rushed to the neighbour’s house, attempting to alert the occupant by knocking, ringing the bell, and shouting warnings.
When there was no response, she forcefully kicked the door open and entered the home, where she found the resident unaware of the fire. Despite intense heat, she managed to pull the neighbour to safety.
Life saved amid destruction
Although the house was destroyed in the blaze, the occupant—recently widowed—survived, thanks to the timely intervention. She later expressed gratitude to the family for their life-saving efforts.
Recognition and praise
Jovani has since been praised by his school and community, though he humbly described his actions as simply being a “good neighbour.”
Local firefighters have also recognised his courage, offering him a place in their junior firefighter squad.
