A 21-month-old Palestinian toddler was returned to his family after nearly 10 hours in detention, with medical reports indicating injuries consistent with burns and wounds, sparking serious allegations of abuse.
Child detained with father
The child, Jawad Abu Nassar, was reportedly detained along with his father, Osama Abu Nassar, in central Gaza on March 19. According to family members, the father had taken the toddler out during the day ahead of Eid celebrations but did not return home.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the father approached a restricted military zone, where Israeli forces were stationed.
Injuries noticed after release
The child was later handed over to his family through the International Committee of the Red Cross. Upon receiving him, family members noticed blood stains on his clothes and signs of physical injuries.
Medical examinations reportedly identified swelling and wounds around the knees, with doctors suggesting the marks were consistent with cigarette burns and sharp object injuries.
Family alleges abuse
The child’s grandfather stated that the toddler showed signs of distress, including continuous crying, fever, and fear. He also claimed the injuries could not have resulted from shrapnel or accidental harm.
Family members allege that the child may have been harmed during detention, raising concerns about treatment in custody.
Israeli military denies allegations
In response, Israeli authorities rejected the accusations, stating that the claims were “completely unfounded.” Officials said the child was brought into a restricted area and was cared for by military personnel before being safely handed over.
They further asserted that medical attention was provided and denied any form of abuse.
Ongoing concerns
The incident has added to growing concerns over civilian safety in conflict zones, particularly involving children. Reports indicate that several individuals detained near restricted zones have alleged mistreatment.
The case continues to draw attention amid the broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with calls for greater transparency and protection for civilians.
