Donald Trump hosted a high-profile Republican fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Saturday night even as Iranian missile attacks intensified across the Middle East, raising questions about timing and leadership priorities.
Videos posted on social media showed Trump greeting wealthy guests at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Florida. The event reportedly carried a price tag of $1 million per attendee. The fundraiser went ahead despite escalating hostilities following the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in coordinated airstrikes on Tehran.
Rising casualties and military action
Military officials confirmed on Sunday that three US service members were killed and five others seriously wounded during Operation Epic Fury. In retaliation for Khamenei’s killing, Iran launched missile and drone strikes targeting US and allied positions across the region.
Within 24 hours, missile activity was reported across at least 10 countries, including Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Oman and Qatar. The United Kingdom also confirmed intercepting missiles heading towards Cyprus, where it maintains a major military base.
Political optics under scrutiny
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt earlier indicated that the President intended to attend the fundraiser despite the unfolding crisis. Social media posts showed prominent Republican figures, including Marco Rubio and diplomat Steve Witkoff, interacting with guests at the event.
Critics argue that hosting a celebratory gathering during a period of active military engagement sends a conflicting message. Supporters, however, maintain that governance and political commitments often continue alongside national security operations.
As tensions remain high across West Asia, global leaders are closely monitoring developments amid fears of broader regional instability.
