US President Donald Trump began 2026 by declaring a simple yet sweeping New Year’s resolution — “Peace on Earth” — during his annual New Year’s Eve celebration at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Trump, celebrating alongside First Lady Melania Trump and close allies, made the remark while briefly addressing reporters at the black-tie event hosted at his Palm Beach estate. The gathering, often described as his political and social power hub, was attended by prominent figures from the MAGA movement, business leaders and senior aides.
When asked about his New Year’s resolution, Trump paused briefly before responding, “Yes, I do. Peace. Peace on Earth,” with Melania standing beside him and smiling. The comment quickly became the focal point of the evening.
Trump reiterates ‘champion of peace’ claim
In recent months, Trump has repeatedly portrayed himself as a global peacemaker, claiming credit for ending eight international conflicts in 2025. Among these, he has cited the India–Pakistan conflict, as well as disputes involving Iran and Israel, and Cambodia and Thailand.
While Trump’s supporters view these statements as evidence of assertive diplomacy, critics argue that several of his claims are exaggerated and lack independent verification. Nevertheless, Trump has consistently framed his foreign policy record as one centred on conflict resolution rather than escalation.
Nobel Peace Prize demand resurfaces
Trump has also openly expressed his belief that his efforts to end wars deserve global recognition. He has repeatedly suggested that he should have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, voicing disappointment when the honour did not come his way. On multiple occasions, he has argued that his role in de-escalating conflicts was overlooked while others were celebrated.
Despite the controversy surrounding his claims, Trump continues to position peace as a defining theme of his leadership. His New Year’s message, delivered in the midst of celebration and political symbolism at Mar-a-Lago, reinforces his attempt to shape the narrative of his presidency as one focused on ending wars.
As 2026 begins, Trump’s declaration of “Peace on Earth” sets an ambitious tone — one that supporters embrace and critics scrutinise closely.
