Washington: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to American Olympic ice hockey star Connor Hellebuyck, following his decisive role in ending a 46-year Olympic gold medal drought for the United States.
The announcement came during Trump’s State of the Union address, where he praised Hellebuyck’s performance in the gold-medal match at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
“I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honour,” Trump said to loud applause from lawmakers.
Heroics in gold-medal clash
Hellebuyck delivered a standout performance in the United States’ dramatic 2–1 victory over arch-rivals Canada, making 41 saves — many of them spectacular — to secure the title. The win marked the first Olympic gold in men’s ice hockey for Team USA since 1980.
During his address, Trump introduced members of the United States men’s national ice hockey team, who entered the House chamber to sustained applause. The president described the triumph as a moment of national pride.
Political undertones
The sporting achievement has spilled into the political arena. The White House appeared to take aim at former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had previously predicted that Canada would claim gold at the 2026 Games.
“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau had posted on social media ahead of the tournament. After the United States secured victory, the White House responded with a celebratory post featuring a bald eagle preying on a Canadian goose.
The episode added a diplomatic edge to what was already one of the most intense rivalries in international sport.
Women’s team absence noted
The ceremony announcement also drew attention after the United States women’s national ice hockey team — which also captured Olympic gold — declined an invitation to attend the State of the Union.
Acknowledging their achievement, Trump said the women’s team would “soon be coming to the White House,” indicating plans for a separate event to honour their success.
Medal of Freedom tradition
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the United States’ highest civilian honour, awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to national interests, world peace, culture, or other significant public or private endeavours.
During his first term, Trump presented the award to several prominent athletes, including golfer Tiger Woods, football greats Alan Page and Roger Staubach, and posthumously to baseball legend Babe Ruth.
