An archival video of former U.S. President Donald Trump is being misrepresented online amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions over the Indus Water Treaty, which New Delhi has reportedly frozen following the Pahalgam terror strike that claimed 26 lives.
The circulated footage shows Trump mockingly gasping, “Ahh… I need water… help me,” which social media users wrongly claim is a sarcastic dig at Pakistan’s water scarcity. The viral caption reads: “Donald Trump trolled whole Pakistan on water,” and has been widely shared, including by BJP politician Tajinder Bagga on Instagram.
However, a fact-check by News18 debunks this claim. The clip actually dates back to 2013, when Trump was lampooning Senator Marco Rubio for awkwardly pausing his speech to drink water. Trump mimicked Rubio’s action, mocking him as a “choke artist”, dramatically swigging from a water bottle and tossing it over his shoulder for comic effect.
There is no reference to Pakistan, nor is the gesture related to any diplomatic issue. The video has been taken out of its original context, edited to align with the current narrative surrounding India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, and is being falsely portrayed as a political insult.
The incident highlights the danger of misinformation during sensitive geopolitical developments. Viewers are urged to verify viral content before sharing, especially when it involves altered or misused media that could inflame tensions or mislead the public.
