In a keynote address at the 10th edition of the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, Tulsi Gabbard, the United States Director of National Intelligence, clarified that President Donald Trump’s “America First” slogan should not be misunderstood as a policy of isolation. Gabbard, the first Hindu intelligence chief of the US, emphasized that the slogan is about prioritizing the safety, security, and freedom of the American people, but it does not mean that the US is standing alone in the global arena.

She stated, “President Trump is committed to America first, putting the safety, security, and freedom of the American people at the forefront of his policies and his decisions. But this should not be misunderstood to mean that America First is America alone.” She further highlighted the similar commitments of other leaders, stating that “PM Modi is committed to India First, Prime Minister Luxon is committed to New Zealand First.”

Gabbard expressed confidence in the growing relationship between the United States and India, stating that under the leadership of President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, the partnership between the two countries would continue to flourish. She also took a moment to thank PM Modi for inviting her to India during his US visit in February.

Gabbard’s visit to India is a part of her diplomatic engagements as the US intelligence chief, and it comes after her bilateral talks with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, participation in an intelligence conclave, and meetings with high-ranking Indian officials, including PM Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

She concluded her speech by saying, “These gatherings are so important because they give us the opportunity to come together and engage in direct dialogue on pressing issues.”

Gabbard’s visit to India marks the first visit by a senior member of President Trump’s administration, emphasizing the significance of the India-US partnership.
