A climate of fear is sweeping US universities as immigration authorities detain and deport international students and scholars accused of supporting Hamas by protesting Israel’s war in Gaza. Though many academics assert their protests are against the war, not in support of Hamas, the Trump administration has revoked over 300 visas and detained several scholars, claiming national security threats.

Key figures like Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil and Tufts PhD student Rümeysa Öztürk are among those held in detention. Faculty organizations filed a lawsuit on March 25, arguing these actions violate constitutional free speech rights. Critics are calling the deportations “ideological” and warn that the administration’s sweeping theory could be used to suppress dissent on any policy.

The issue has ignited legal challenges, travel fears, and growing concern among researchers, who now fear detention merely for expressing their political views.
