A 41-year-old American man tragically passed away during his journey from Nadi, Fiji to San Francisco aboard Fiji Airways flight FJ780 last Saturday. Approximately 90 minutes away from San Francisco International Airport, the individual encountered a severe medical condition, as confirmed by Fiji Airways. Despite the immediate intervention of the cabin crew and a doctor onboard, the passenger could not be revived.
The Airbus crew declared a medical emergency, and the flight successfully landed at San Francisco International Airport at 2:34 p.m., according to FlightAware records.
In a statement, Fiji Airways expressed deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The airline’s ground operations and relevant authorities were pre-informed and ready to assist upon the flight’s arrival in San Francisco. The identity of the passenger and the specific medical condition involved have not been disclosed by the airline, respecting privacy considerations.
“Fiji Airways remains steadfast in prioritizing the safety and welfare of our passengers and crew. We are fully cooperating with authorities in managing this situation,” the airline emphasized.
Moreover, Fiji Airways extended heartfelt condolences to the man’s family and acknowledged the swift and professional response of the cabin crew and the assisting doctor during the emergency.
This incident echoes a previous case in February, where a 63-year-old passenger aboard a Lufthansa flight from Thailand to Germany tragically passed away. Witnesses described the distressing scene as the man exhibited severe symptoms, including the expulsion of significant amounts of blood, before succumbing to his condition.
Medical emergencies during flights are rare but not unprecedented. According to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine, approximately 1 in 600 flights encounter a medical emergency, with only a small fraction resulting in a passenger’s death.
